½ cup white sugar

2 packages instant yeast

1 tbsp vanilla

1 tsp salt

6 to 6.5 cups all purpose flour

1.5 cups milk

6 tbsp butter, cubed

4 eggs

2 tbsp water

  • In a large bowl or stand mixer, mix sugar, yeast, salt & 2 cups of flour
  • In the microwave, heat milk and butter until warm & butter has melted (if it gets really hot, let cool before adding to recipe). Add to dry ingredients and mix until the dry ingredients are incorporated. Add 3 eggs and vanilla and beat on high for 2 minutes.
  • Mix in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will still be sticky). Knead the dough for 4-5 minutes in the mixer with a dough hook or by hand for about 8 minutes.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to grease all sides. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled – about 45 minutes.
  • Punch down dough, turn on a lightly floured surface and divide into thirds. Try to keep the three pieces as even in size as possible for your braid! Roll each portion into a long rope. Place ropes on a lined baking sheet and braid together. Bring the ends together to form a ring and pinch together.
  • Cover with a light kitchen town and let rise in a warm place until doubled again, about 20 minutes. Then preheat your oven to 375.
  • In a bowl whisk 1 egg and water and carefully brush over dough. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. You can brush the bread again with the egg wash mixture half way through baking time to get areas that have risen during cooking.
  • If you wish, decorate your Easter bread! We used colourful sprinkles and a simple icing to finish our bread.
  • Enjoy!
