With each changing season, there is always the urge to revamp your wardrobe and purchase some new pieces that feel more fitting for the time of year. Living in Manitoba, those changes between seasons are so drastic that switching from summer to fall to winter can feel like a total overhaul of your closet! Winter can be an especially interesting transition. You probably want to keep wearing some of those fall staples – knit sweaters, scarves, boots – but make them feel festive and functional through December and all the different types of events you have going on.
Enter the capsule wardrobe. The concept is to use a few staple pieces and rework them into several different outfits for different occasions. “The experts” say that a capsule wardrobe should be composed of approximately 30 pieces. The pieces should last you through a season and many of the pieces should be able to mesh into the following season, allowing for the purchase of a few more items to keep you fresh and of course practical for the current weather conditions.
We’re here to show you our holiday capsule wardrobe and how we focused 6 outfits around one shirt. You can use this as inspiration for how to use pieces currently hanging in your closet to build a unique wardrobe with fresh daily options. Or maybe this will help you see what staple pieces are missing from your wardrobe that can help you create more outfit options without buying 6 totally new outfits.
We chose a grey tunic top with a split side. The sleeves are mid length, so perfect for winter as it is easy to wear under a jacket or sweater, or on its own with out freezing! The shirt is also long enough to wear over a pair of leggings and still look appropriate while not so long and bulky that it becomes awkward to tuck into pants or a skirt.
The other pieces
We used a total of 19 pieces aside from the grey shirt to put together these 6 looks. This includes bags – as far as we’re concerned these don’t necessarily need to be included in your 30-item limit.
